(Hartford, CT) Clean Water Action is pleased to work on a variety of initiatives that reduce waste and protect our environment. The planned shutdown of the Hartford incinerator in 2022 will significantly reduce the toxic air pollution in Hartford and surrounding communities but requires transformative changes in the management of waste. Clean Water Action is proud to be working with allies to support expanded recycling and composting, expand producer-responsibility programs administered by DEEP and work on efforts to shift away from toxic packaging, plastics and back to reusables.
Anne Hulick, Connecticut Director, stated “We’ve been part of many initiatives to address our burgeoning waste problem, including 1) organizing work to expand the use of reusables in school cafeterias, 2) support legislative efforts to expand the state’s “Bottle bill” and plastic bag bans and 3) to organize local residents on proposals to put a medical waste incinerator in Bristol and expand and ash dump by 68 acres in Putnam CT that will destroy abutting wetlands and release wastewater from the plants into the Quinebaug River. All of these efforts, in partnership with many allies and local leaders, are critical steps to reduce waste, protect health and our environment.
