Straws by Request

We are working with restaurants across New Jersey to join our “PDF iconStraws by Request” program, which will help you save money, go green, and make your customers happy.

The U.S. consumes 500 million straws a day. That’s enough straws to circle the planet more than two-and-a-half times each day. The U.S. consumes 182 billion straws in a year. This generates 342 million pounds of waste entering our landfills, incinerators, and waterways.

Due to their toxicity, plastic straws may not be something your customers want in their drinks. They are made of a petroleum byproduct called polypropylene mixed with colorants and plasticizers
and don’t biodegrade naturally in the environment.

Bring Your Own Cup

We are also working with businesses to reduce single-use disposable cups - we use 120 billion of these cups every year in the U.S.! Starbucks uses more that 8,000 paper cups a minute. Bring Your Own Cup programs include the option to include incentives and discounts for your customers to either buy and reuse your own branded cup or bring their own. It's a win-win because you will save money on the amount of disposable plastic cups purchased each year and will increase your repeat customer base.

Break The Bag

Clean Water Action’s ReThink Disposable program is encouraging businesses across New Jersey to join our “PDF iconBreak from the Bag” program, which helps you save money and go green by reducing single-use disposable plastic waste, and make your customers happy.

We dispose of 100 billion plastic bags every year in the U.S., over 4 billion of which are used and disposed of in New Jersey. Plastic bags are easily carried by wind and litter our communities and waterways. They clog storm drains, trash our neighborhoods and natural landscapes, and harm marine life as they are mistaken for food.
