Washington DC -- Today the Senate attempted to move forward to debate the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. In a repeat of what happened when Majority Leader Schumer filed cloture on the Freedom to Vote Act, Senate Republicans filibustered, preventing debate.

Clean Water Action President and CEO, Bob Wendelgass, released the following statement:

“Reform the filibuster now. It’s the only way to move forward -- Republicans have abdicated their responsibility to help govern."

"Every day their obstruction is allowed to continue is another day closer to mass disenfranchisement and disaster for our nation. Senate Republicans are operating on bad faith and lies, hoping the election laws passed by their counterparts in state legislatures can cause enough chaos to return them to power in 2022 or 2024. They are putting our democracy on the line for partisan gain. The only way to counter that is to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act -- and the only way to pass these bills is by taking the filibuster away as a weapon."

"Senate Democrats must act now -- we can’t wait any longer. There is too much at risk.”
