A Budget Disaster for Water and Health

Tuesday, July 18, 2017

Washington, D.C. – Today the House Appropriations Committee considers a budget proposal that includes deep cuts to critical environmental programs and policy riders that would gut clean water and other health and safety protections. One of the policy riders in the appropriations bill would exempt Trump’s EPA from having to follow the Administrative Procedures Act in their efforts to eliminate the Clean Water Rule.

Clean Water Action President and CEO Bob Wendelgass released the following statement:

“This budget proposal would be a disaster for our water and our health. Following Trump’s lead, House Republicans are slashing key programs we rely on for clean water and healthy air. Taking resources away from programs like the Clean Water State Revolving Fund - a vital funding stream for wastewater treatment - would be a surefire way to harm our waterways and drinking water, and to stick our communities with the cleanup tab.”

“This bill also contains a backdoor attempt to gut the Clean Water Act. Republicans leaders know that Americans want clean water not protections for polluter profits, so they are trying to sneak their dangerous regulatory rollback agenda into the budget. Congress must reject damaging policy riders and reckless cuts to vital programs that protect our water and health.”

Since our founding during the campaign to pass the landmark Clean Water Act in 1972, Clean Water Action has worked to win strong health and environmental protections by bringing issue expertise, solution-oriented thinking and people power to the table. We will protect clean water in the face of attacks from a polluter friendly Administration and Congress.
