The closure of the Shenango Coke Works on Neville Island significantly improved air quality for the more than 70,000 residents living nearby. Whether these improvements will last remains a mystery.
The site's owner, DTE Energy, recently submitted their “Notice of Intent to Remediate.” Initial analysis suggests that they plan to remediate the site only to specifications that would allow another dirty industry there, rather than making the area safe for public use or re-zoning.
Clean Water Action is partnering with the community group Allegheny County Clean Air Now (ACCAN) to urge the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to hold a public hearing on DTE’s remediation and reuse plans, so that the community has an opportunity to provide input on those plans.
