Consumers Need to Know About Mercury in Fish

One in six women of childbearing age in the United States is at risk of having newborns with problems from mercury exposure in the womb.

Mercury pollution from trash incinerators, coal fired power plants, dental offices, and other sources has contaminated fish across New England and in our oceans. Mercury poisoning can cause brain and nerve damage in children and adults.

The Rhode Island Department of Health warns that pregnant or nursing women, women of childbearing age and young children should not eat any Albacore Tuna, Swordfish, Shark, or freshwater fish caught in Rhode Island (except stocked trout) due to mercury contamination.
