Reckless: Clean Water Action statement on President Trump Withdrawing from the Paris Agreement

Thursday, June 1, 2017

Washington, D.C. - Today, The Trump Administration said it would begin the process of withdrawing the United States from the landmark Paris Climate Agreement. Clean Water Action President and CEO Bob Wendelgass released the following statement.

"This announcement makes it clear that the oil and gas industry, along with unscrupulous ideologues like Steve Bannon and Scott Pruitt, are calling the shots in the Trump White House. This Administration seems intent on giving the fossil fuel industry everything it wants, at the expense of turning the United States into a global pariah. It is a ridiculous and cynical decision that signals to the world that Trump’s United States aspires to be a deadbeat who won't keep our commitments."

"If the President succeeds in pulling out of the agreement, we will join Syria and Nicaragua as the only other countries not part of the pact. Pulling out of this landmark treaty will undermine more than a century of American leadership on global issues and damage other diplomatic efforts - as we saw in the past week, countries like Germany and France believe us to be unreliable partners and are looking past the U.S. to partner with countries who want to lead. We will willingly give up the vast economic opportunities created by action on climate - ceding leadership in the clean energy economy to countries like India and China who are stepping up to act right now. It will be up to states and cities to salvage whatever shreds of American leadership still remain."

"President Trump needs to stop getting his news from Twitter. Climate change is real and it's happening right now. We spent years negotiating a truly great accomplishment in global diplomacy in order to preserve life as we know it. We owe it to our children to act now. Instead, the President seems committed to sticking his head in the sand. "
