1Sky, One Goal: Bold Federal Action On Climate Change!

1Sky was created to focus the power of millions of concerned Americans on a single goal: bold federal action by 2010 to reverse global warming based on a simple set of solutions. We're creating a movement that our leaders can't ignore!
Michigan is a crucial player in the fight for clean energy legislation on the federal level. That's why Clean Water Action supports and hosts 1Sky Michigan! That's why we need you to join.
The 1Sky Solutions
The 1Sky Campaign is based on a simple set of solutions that are grounded what science says we must do to avert climate catastrophe—dramatically reduce carbon emissions while maximizing energy efficiency, renewable energy and breakthrough technologies. By shifting to a clean energy economy, we can loosen our dependence on foreign oil, unlock the potential of sustainable industry and usher in a new era of prosperity and green jobs.
Solution 1
- An economy that runs on clean energy needs green jobs. As we meet the challenges of the climate crisis, we have the opportunity for unprecedented labor mobilization and economic vitality.
- We propose creating 5 million new jobs that will help conserve energy and jumpstart the deployment of new technologies.
- The green workforce will help lower barriers for investors and help revitalize communities that need it the most.
- Michigan has a large amount of underutilized industrial innovation and production capacity. We can put that capacity to work to become a leader in green energy, creating thousands of new jobs, and helping to revitalize our state's economy.
Solution 2
- We need to cut carbon by at least 25% below 1990 levels by 2020, and at least 80% below 1990 levels by 2050. These are the minimum reductions that leading scientists have determined are necessary to prevent catastrophic changes.
- These reductions are possible. The cost of clean energy is falling fast. The potential for energy efficiency and renewable energy gains in the American economy is enormous. New developments, like advanced solar and wind systems, hybrid and electric cars, new and growing public transit systems, and home energy efficiency retrofits are becoming increasingly available and economical.
- Above all, our climate solutions must be comprehensive and fair. Because our one sky belongs to all of us, our climate policy must invest in the earth's common future, protect vulnerable populations and environments, and create a secure, clean economy for all.
Solution 3
- Coal-fired power plants represent over a third of our carbon emissions.
- Emissions from coal-fired power plants are a detriment to public health, lakes and streams, agriculture, and the global environment.
- There is no such thing as "clean" coal. Coal produces more global warming pollution than any other fuel for generating electricity.
- Building new coal plants is a long-term, expensive investment in a dirty energy future. Coal will only increase in cost as carbon taxes or other carbon constraints are put in place.
- In spite of the high cost of coal, there are currently over 150 proposed new coal-fired power plants in some stage of development in the U.S. today. If we're going to start building a new economy, we need to start with a moratorium on coal.
- At this point, any new energy should come from renewable sources, which we know create more jobs per megawatt, at lower cost to society.
Together, we can convince our leaders to chart a new direction—away from the catastrophes of global warming and toward a new era of economic prosperity. This is your chance to change the course of history, so join 1Sky Michigan today.
