Senate's Vote Signals New Opportunities, Challenges In Global Warming Fight

June 9, 2008

Washington, DC - The Senate's June 6 vote on the Climate Security Act shows that a majority of the Senate now supports action to address global warming, while a misguided and uninformed minority resist moving America toward a new energy future. Clean Water Action will step up efforts to mobilize all Americans to support strong global warming and energy policy and hold their elected officials accountable.

"The United States Senate is finally taking seriously the need to enact policies to curb global warming and we congratulate Majority Leader Reid and Senators Boxer, Warner and Leiberman on their leadership in bringing this issue forward," said Clean Water Action President John DeCock. "But the outcome of the June 6 debate also demonstrates that the American people, not special interests, have to have the loudest voice on our energy future and that's where Clean Water Action will be focusing its efforts during the coming months."

The vote June 6 ended debate on the Climate Security Act, the first time the Senate has considered comprehensive legislation to curb global warming pollution. Clean Water Action was prepared to support a variety of strengthening amendments had the bill moved forward and opposed propose subsidies for the nuclear and coal power industries.

"We must curb global warming while protecting our water resources and creating a new American energy economy built around safe, affordable clean alternatives that create jobs right here at home," said DeCock, "We won't be able to do that if we subsidize outdated energy sources like nuclear and coal that can't get the job done and pose huge environmental and economic challenges."
