Watershed Protection

Little Lehigh
Despite efforts by a large group of affected residents, the Salisbury Township School Board in Lehigh County has agreed to sell over 40 acres of environmentally sensitive watershed lands to developers. This property contains finger wetlands and springs that mitigate runoff from South Mountain into the Trout Creek, a native trout stream. Trout Creek is already evidencing erosion from previous upstream development.

CWA is working with concerned residents and groups to block development of these lands, particularly the areas that are extremely sensitive. Development plans have so far been rejected by the Municipal Planning Committee. Part of the agreement of sale with the School Board provides that if the developer cannot achieve a pre-determined, high level of density on the site, they can void the agreement-of-sale. Residents believe that site conditions can significantly restrict density and the sale will be aborted, allowing applications for municipal, county and state funds to preserve the land.
