Allegheny County Air Pollution
Clean Water Action is working with the Allegheny County Health Department on an air pollution policy that will ensure that no neighborhood is unfairly burdened by too much pollution.
Since 1996, Clean Water Action has worked with residents in the municipalities across the Ohio River from Neville Island, home to 24 industrial facilities. The Neville Island Good Neighbor Committee works to reduce the pollution coming from Neville Island and ensure that industry is being a "good neighbor."
In 2004, we began working with residents of the Mon Valley who came to Clean Water Action with concerns about air pollution's impact on their health. REACH Mon Valley is just getting started on many exciting projects, including a local air sampling program and an unofficial cancer registry.
The Allegheny County Partnership to Reduce Diesel Pollution
Clean Water Action and the Group Against Smog & Pollution (GASP) launched a local campaign to reduce toxic diesel pollution in Allegheny County. Diesel exhaust is one of the biggest threats to health in the Pittsburgh region. It contributes to both respiratory and cardiac problems and is a significant cause of cancer. It is estimated that each year in Allegheny County, diesel emissions cause over 2,300 asthma attacks and 162 premature deaths.
