John Litzke, Philadelphia

John LitzkeJohn began his work with Clean Water Action during the recent mid-term elections. He made thousands of calls to spread the word about candidates who would be leaders in protecting our health and the environment. Last November John joined Clean Water Action staff and other volunteers in Harrisburg for a Lobby Day. Drawing from his professional experience as a social worker, John spoke to State Representatives and Senators about the problem of mercury pollution, and urged them to approve of the Governor's good rule to reduce mercury emissions from the State's coal plants. His work continues now as he helps with the Recycle NOW Philadelphia campaign. Read a few words from John on why he volunteers.

A word from John:

My name is John Edward Litzke Jr. I am a happy, life-long Philadelphian. I graduated from Frankford High, Delaware Valley College and Temple University, respectively, and I can leap tall buildings in a single bound. Below is the abbreviated version of what drives me each day. And why I volunteer.

  • The physical and spiritual connection we all have towards this planet, and to each other.
  • The power of survivorship and the energy and will to live every day.
  • The want to change the broken paradigms within the seats of power.
  • The human need for community, tribe, family and friends for companionship, sustenance, and support.
  • Wonder for what one generation will leave for the next.
  • The health and importance of our air, plants, water, animals and earth and how human harmony is in relation to these essentials.

I have embraced volunteer work as an integral part of me and my life. It comes easily to me. After surviving stroke and heart tumors at 16 years old, I began volunteering with the Zipper Club to provide life-giving support to heart patients of all kinds. Over the next 25 years, I have volunteered with groups to help improve or alleviate the symptoms that affect the human condition here in Philadelphia.

I appreciate the recognition Clean Water Action has bestowed on me for this month. Our world needs volunteers and the volunteer spirit more than ever. Our work, however, is far from over. I doubt it will ever end.
