2007 Environmental Candidates for State Legislature*
NJEF endorses the following candidates in the following legislative districts to help move our environmental priorities:
2nd (Atlantic County)
Senate: James Whelan (D)
Assembly: Blondell Spellman (D)
- As mayor, Whelan made Atlantic City a renewable
energy leader, while Spellman is a community activist with a strong voice for environmental justice.
- Both are strong supporters of strengthening the State's open space and site remediation programs.

3rd (Salem/Cumberland/Gloucester Counties)
Assembly: John Burzichelli (D) and Doug Fisher (D)
- Burzichelli guided Assembly passage of a bill to curtail eminent domain abuse and wants further reforms.
- Fisher is playing a key role in ensuring funding for open space, historic and farmland preservation.

7th (Burlington and Camden Counties)
Senate: Diane Allen (R)
- Outspoken advocate for open space protection,
including the preservation of Petty's Island and
Palmyra Cove, and against eminent domain abuse.
Assembly: Dr. Herb Conaway (D)
- He helped stop implementation of the fast track,
"EZ Pass for Polluter's law"--the only South Jersey
legislator to do so.

11th (Monmouth County)
Senate: Sean Kean (R)
- Prime sponsor of the New Jersey Clean Cars Act.
- A champion for preserving open space including the Takanasssee Beach Club in Elberon/Long Branch.
Assembly: Mary Pat Angelini (R) and David Rible (R)
- Staunch supporters of stronger clean water rules,
increased open space funding and ethics reform.

12th (Monmouth and Mercer Counties)
Senate: Ellen Karcher (D)
- Sponsoring the Coastal/Ocean Protection Council Act.
- Helped secure key protections for the Manasquan, Metedeconk and Swimming Rivers and Reservoirs.
- A leader against the pervasive influence of money on politics and conflicts of interests.
Assembly: Michael Panter (D) and Amy Mallet (D)
- Panter is a key leader on the Assembly Environment Committee on issues ranging from open space funding to global warming, while Mallet is a fresh voice linking public health to the environment.
- Strong advocates of ending eminent domain abuse and ensuring environmental justice.

14th (Mercer and Middlesex Counties)
Senate: Bill Baroni (R)
- Helped stop Rt. 92 to avoid wasting millions of
tax payer dollars, increasing sprawl & trashing wetlands.
- Champion of ethics and campaign finance reforms.
- 100% pro-environment record.
Assembly: Linda Greenstein (D) and Wayne D'Angelo (D)
- Greenstein prime sponsor of the Global Warming
Response Act and is fighting to improve cleanups at sites like Hamilton's WR Grace & American Standard.
- D'Angelo is a union leader whose own "local" prioritizes
solar energy & energy efficiency, committed to fostering
cooperation between the labor & environmental communities.
- Both certified "Clean Elections" candidates as is Baroni.

29th (Essex and Union Counties)
Senate: William Payne (I)
- Leading legislator in the fight against environmental
injustices, lead poisoning and diesel pollution.
- Effectively uses the bully pulpit provided as chair of an Assembly Committee and a Black Caucus member.
Assembly: Grace Spencer (D) and Albert Coutinho (D)
- The Ironbound's Coutinho has fought against
cumulative impacts from garbage incinerators to toxic sites, while Spencer supports "just saying no" to
disproportionate impacts in low income and minority
communities.

38th (Bergen County)
Senate: Bob Gordon (D)
Assembly: Joan Voss (D)
- Both helped secure increased protections for Bergen County's drinking water supplies.
- Gordon helps lead the Assembly Environment Comm., while Voss, a former teacher, is sponsoring a bill to
require less toxic pesticide use in day care centers.

39th (Bergen County)
Assembly: Charlotte Vandervalk (R) and John Rooney (R)
- Experienced champions with particular expertise in health (Vandervalk) and environmental (Rooney) issues.
- Leaders in the fight to preserve open space and stop sprawl especially in the Oradell Reservoir watershed.
