Ask Your Town to Help Reduce Diesel Pollution!
Ask Governor Corzine to Sign Executive Order!

The Problem:
  • According to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) data, NJ faces the nation's 2nd greatest cancer risk from diesel soot. The Garden state is also considered the 4th worst in the nation for other non-cancer impacts.
  • The asthma rate in NJ's urban school age children is estimated to be as high as 25% (double the state & national average).
  • Diesel pollution presents a grave injustice to NJ's most vulnerable populations-the children, elderly, ailing, low income and communities of color, especially those residing in urban centers and transportation hubs. The cost to NJ families and the state is too high to wait any longer.
The Solution:
The passage of the 2005 diesel law (A3182/S175) set us on a positive course to reduce diesel pollution, but doesn't go far enough. NJEF needs your help in asking your town, schools, and governor to take the "Kids Clean Air Zones" pledge.

  • Ask Governor Corzine to sign an Executive Order (EO) that will help further reduce diesel air pollution, especially in "toxic hot spots." Ask that the EO go beyond the 2005 law by requiring:
    • private diesel powered vehicles & equipment utilized in public contracts be retrofitted with emission reduction devises;
    • installation of community-based monitoring in "diesel hot spots"; and
    • action taken on NJ's diesel hot spots such as urban areas, transportation corridors and ports.
    • rejection of projects that cumulatively or disproportionately impact lower income or minority communities.
    • You can also call or mail a letter to: Honorable Jon Corzine, P.O. Box 001, Trenton, NJ 08625, Phone: 609-292-6000, Fax: 609-292-3454

  • Call and/or write a letter to your Mayor and Council. Attend the next council meeting and ask that the Mayor and Council adopt a Diesel Emissions Reduction Resolution. View our Sample Letter to the Mayor.
  • Ask your school to take the Diesel No-Idling Pledge.
