Dear Governor _______________,
Mercury emissions from trash incinerators, power plants, dental offices, and other sources have contaminated fresh water fish and seafood all over New England. Exposure to very small concentrations of mercury, a dangerous neurotoxin, is linked to learning disabilities and developmental delays in children, and can cause health problems in adults as well. Our fish is contaminated with mercury so that shark, swordfish, steak tuna, and many other fish are unsafe for women of childbearing age and young children to eat.
The New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers pledged in 1998 to “virtually eliminate” mercury emission from the region, but we have not yet seen the timeline that will make that happen. All six states have taken important steps in that direction, but much more work needs to be done to protect our children from exposure to mercury. Please make it a top priority to create an action plan and timeline to virtually eliminate mercury use, release, and exposures in New England by the year 2010.
Include a personal anecdote, or explain why this issue is so important to you.
