New England Zero Mercury Campaign
Read any health magazine these days and you're likely to find reports on the benefits of including fish in a well-balanced diet. However, very few health-conscious consumers realize that even a single serving of certain types of fish could pose a serious health risk.
Unfortunately, pollution from incinerators and coal-burning power plants has severely contaminated certain species of fish with the toxin mercury. Mercury has been proven to cause nervous system damage ranging from learning disorders and developmental disabilities to tremors and hallucinations.
Because mercury accumulates in the environment without breaking down, there is no safe level of mercury use or emissions. That's why Clean Water Action and the New England Zero Mercury Campaign (NEZMC) are working to eliminate the use and release of, and human exposure to mercury to protect the health and development of our children.
