Every day, the oil and gas industry leaks or intentionally flares methane, an extremely potent greenhouse gas, into our air. As the second largest producer of natural gas in the nation, Pennsylvania is responsible for roughly 1% of global man-made greenhouse gas emissions. That means we’ve got an opportunity to make a significant difference.
To address this issue the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) introduced permit rules for new natural gas operations that will require companies to control 98% of methane emissions and cover emission from procedures that remove liquid and solids from pipelines and gas wells. The rule is a great initial step toward reducing methane emissions, but we need to strengthen some areas. Let DEP know you’re grateful for their action on methane but want to see them finalize the strongest rule possible.
