We are urging Governor Granholm to sign an executive order that would prevent coal plants from being built until we have measures that will protect the public health and prevent carbon dioxide pollution. Carbon dioxide pollution from coal plants is one of the biggest contributors to global warming in the United States, producing almost 40 percent of the nation's global warming pollution.
In 2007, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius ordered the state's environmental agency to consider the negative impact of global warming CO2 emissions in air quality permits for coal-burning power plants. The action was the first time a Governor has ordered a crackdown on CO2 pollution and comes after more than 60 other coal plants have been turned down or halted across country.
In addition to protecting our quality of life, our citizens also want more investment in clean, renewable energy because we recognize it is an engine of economic growth and jobs. Instead of strapping ratepayers with the cost of old-fashioned, polluting coal plants, that money should be going towards investment in efficiency and renewable energy that will bring tens of thousands of jobs to Michigan.
Take Action: Sign the petition and urge Gov. Granholm to declare CO2 emissions a global warming pollutant!
