Last week, the Florida State Legislature passed Senate Bill 360 the so called "Community Renewal Act" which is an attack on communities that want planned growth to protect the quality of life of residents, control costs, and protect public health and the environment.
Senate Bill 360 would allow developers to gobble up sensitive and rural lands by easing restrictions, extending building permits and allowing unchecked development.
For Florida residents, this bill would put large-scale "Developments of Regional Impact" like Lennar's proposed Parklands project on a fast track. Thousands of new residential homes could be built in sensitive areas like the Everglades with no review by the state's growth management agency to ensure that roads, schools and other services can handle it.
Communities across Florida establish growth management plans for a reason. Don't let the Florida Legislature give a green light to developers while leaving the public to fight for services, endure traffic jams, water shortages and failing infrastructure.
