On May 1st, Clean Water Action joined on a letter supporting

, which asks the County Executive to begin the comprehensive review of the 2009 General Development Plan and to include civic participation into the review process.

Why does the General Development Plan matter?

The GDP is the vision for the county, and we, along with the Alliance for Livable Communities, want to make sure that the next GDP addresses improved transportation, protection of the environment, and sustainable development. The GDP impacts land use and zoning, two areas that have an enormous impact on local and regional water quality.

Anne Arundel County has a lot of shoreline, along streams, along rivers, and along the Chesapeake Bay. Sprawl development increases problems with stormwater runoff, which is a major and rising source water pollution in the County.

What’s next?

The Anne Arundel County Council passed the resolution 7-0! While the resolution does not force the county executive to do anything, the County Council has asked his administration for a schedule of next steps on the path to updating the GDP.

Thank you to our allies on the Anne Arundel Alliance for Livable Communities.
