Shape Pittsburgh’s Environmental Future - Vote in the May 16th Primary
President Trump’s continued rollback of federal safeguards means we must look more toward local leaders to provide needed protections for our health and environment. That’s why it’s so important that you vote in the May 16th primary and elect candidates who embrace this responsibility. Clean Water Action has endorsed in the Democratic Primary: Bill Peduto for Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh; Ashleigh Deemer for Pittsburgh City Council, District 4; and Dan Gilman, Pittsburgh City Council, District 8.
Bill Peduto’s environmental leadership and stewardship spans his 30 year career. As mayor, Bill changed how we approached addressing our sewage overflow issue by bringing ALCOSAN, Allegheny County, DEP and EPA together around a new plan that made green infrastructure a major part of the solution. Recognizing that ensuring the safety of our water is one of the most important things that a mayor can do, and that failures at PWSA need to be addressed, Bill is committed to continue pursuing measures that ensure city homes become lead safe and ultimately lead free.
Ashleigh Deemer’s experience is rooted in the environmental movement. She’s a former organizer with Clean Water Action and Clean Air Task Force who fought to reduce exposure to diesel pollution. In her current role as Chief of Staff for Council Member Rudiak, she managed the design and budgeting for the Beechview Senior and Community Center which is set to be the first building subject to the City’s green building policy and LEED certified Silver when done. If elected, Ashleigh will build upon this legacy by among other things, preserving our city greenways and parks.
Dan Gilman’s support of environment efforts goes back to his time as Chief of Staff for then Council Member Bill Peduto. During his first term on council Dan among other things, sponsored and got passed legislation to amend the City of Pittsburgh’s Clean Air Act of 2010 to make it more enforceable and ensure there was funding for full time “Air and Water Inspector” dedicated to enforcing the law. If re-elected, Dan will actively work to expand residential and school based solar programs.
At a time of uncertainty and instability at the federal level, these candidates provide an opportunity to shape a positive environmental future for Pittsburgh. In the Democratic Primary on May 16th please support Bill Peduto for Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh, Ashleigh Deemer for Pittsburgh City Council, District 4 and Dan Gilman, Pittsburgh City Council, District 8.
